So, you see that acronym everywhere, but what is SEO, anyway? Even more importantly, why do I need to know about SEO. Those letters stand for Search Engine Optimization. It is tailoring what you write on the Internet so that the search engines understand what that page is about. And what it’s about is the keyword phrase that you are featuring on the page. SEO is an art and when done properly, Google and the other search engines spread your message the way you want it to be presented.

When Larry Page and Sergey Brin filed for incorporation on September 4, 1998 the landscape shifted. With the birth of Google, marketing was changed forever. With traditional marketing vehicles like radio, billboards, flyers, newspaper and magazine ads the concept is relatively simple. You create an advertisement and hope that potential clients see the ad and take action. Search engines flipped this concept entirely. The customer tells the search engine exactly what they are looking for and the search engine gives them the “best” results. SEO strives to help the search engine recognize your content as the “best” result.

What is SEO or Search Engine Optimization?

Search engine optimization has been around since the beginning of search engines. Well, it has been around since people selling things have wanted to show up higher in the search engines’ results. As soon as someone said, “Hey, why is my competitor at the top of the search results and not me?” SEO was born. After a lot of scrambling, companies found ways to tell the search engines to list them higher in the results. Once this process was named, everyone was asking “What is SEO?” and “How can I use it?”

Key Points of SEO

First you need a keyword phrase to focus on. So, if you are selling cupcakes then “freshly baked cupcakes” might be a good keyword phrase. Now that you have your keyword phrase, you need to put that phrase in the title of your page, in the url of your page and in a subheading. After that, you write the page naturally, talking all about your freshly baked cupcakes.

If you use your keyword phrase too much and really plaster it all over the page then it will have the opposite effect on the SEO. You need to write naturally without overly focusing on that phrase. In the simplest essence, the best practices for SEO are based on providing great content for your viewers. Trickery can end up with your site being banned by the directories, so focusing on helping your audience by providing them with info they need is the best way to go.

Proper Search Engine Optimization

“What is SEO?” is a common question as more and more companies and brands are communicating on the web. Because SEO practices evolve and change, it is important that you use a knowledgeable brand marketing agency to help you optimize your website for the search engines. The truth of the matter is that most people just want their site to be listed immediately at the top spot on Google. But in reality, SEO is a long term path to driving great results to help you build your brand.

“Search Engine Optimization is not a Sprint. It’s a Marathon that takes time to produce results that will impact your bottom line. When done properly, you will have built an inbound marketing system that will drive traffic for a long time.”
